The typical bathroom remodel cost in the US is $6,000 to $18,000. The national average sits around $12,000. NerdWallet puts the typical range at $6,600 to $18,000, or $70 to $250 per square foot.
Where you land depends on three things: how big the room is, whether any plumbing moves, and the finishes you pick.
Here's what that number actually covers. Labor is usually the biggest line, often 40% to 65% of the total. The shower or tub and the vanity take most of what's left. Permits and haul-away are small. They are also easy to leave off a first quote, so check for them.

How much does a bathroom remodel cost by size?
The short answer: a powder room can cost a few thousand dollars, and a large primary bath can pass $30,000. The longer answer depends on how much you replace.
Fixr's 2026 data breaks it down by room type:
- Half bath or powder room: $1,200 to $15,000
- Guest bathroom: $3,500 to $20,000
- Primary bathroom: $7,000 to $30,000
Those ranges are wide for a reason. A half bath with a new toilet, vanity and paint sits at the bottom. The same room with new tile, a moved sink and new wiring sits near the top.
Square footage alone doesn't set the price. Fixr's average works out to about $120 per square foot, but the range runs from $70 to more than $400. That spread tells you the finishes and the plumbing work carry most of the cost.
Why some guides show a much higher number
You may have seen $26,000 quoted for a "midrange" bathroom. That figure comes from the 2025 Cost vs. Value report. It prices one specific job: a 5-by-7-foot bathroom where every fixture is replaced, including the tub, tile surround, toilet, vanity, medicine cabinet and floor.
So the two numbers don't contradict each other. They measure different jobs. When you compare any figure to a quote, ask what scope it assumes.
Shower or tub: what changes the price?
The wet area is where budgets move the most. It's also where most of the plumbing lives.

A walk-in shower typically costs $4,000 to $20,000, with an average of about $12,000, according to This Old House. Fixr's estimate is lower, at $5,000 to $11,000. A prefab unit is the lower-cost route: about $4,000 to $7,000 installed. A custom tiled shower costs more, and the glass door alone can run $300 to $5,000. We break down every part of that number in our walk-in shower cost guide.

Replacing a tub with a shower runs $1,200 to $10,000, depending on how much you tear out. The price isn't the only question here. In a home with only one tub, removing it can matter when you sell. Our tub-to-shower conversion guide walks through both sides.
What it gets you: a walk-in shower is easier to clean and easier to use as you get older.
What to watch for: moving the drain is what pushes a shower project toward the top of its range.
How much do the vanity, toilet and fixtures cost?
These are the parts you see every day. They're also the easiest place to control the budget.
- Vanity and storage: Fixr puts this line at about 25% of the job, or $1,500 to $4,500 on a typical remodel. This Old House reports an average of $2,929 for cabinetry and vanity, removal included.
- Toilet: the fixture itself runs $200 to $600. Installed, This Old House reports an average of $467.
- Faucets, showerhead and lights: a sink faucet runs $75 to $300, a showerhead $50 to $225, and each light fixture $50 to $250.
A vanity that fits the existing plumbing is the simplest swap. For the toilet, flush performance and height matter more than brand. Our toilet guide covers what to check.
What does each line of a quote cover?
This is the part most cost guides skip. Below is how Fixr splits a typical remodel, with the dollar range it gives for each line. Your quote won't match it line for line. But if a line is missing entirely, ask why.

| Quote line | Share of total | Typical dollar range |
|---|---|---|
| Labor | about 50% (40–65%) | about $6,000 |
| Shower or tub | 25% | $1,500–$4,500 |
| Vanity and storage | 25% | $1,500–$4,500 |
| Fixtures (faucets, toilet, lights) | 10% | $1,200–$3,600 |
| Tile work | 10% | $600–$1,800 |
| Plumbing and electrical | 10% | not itemized by Fixr |
| Countertop | 6% | $360–$1,100 |
| Door and window | 5% | $240–$720 |
| Cushion for surprises | 5% | about $600 |
| Permits | 4% | about $500 |
| Demolition and disposal | billed separately | $600–$2,300 |
The shares overlap and add up to more than 100%. Fixr gives them as typical ranges, not a single invoice.
Three lines deserve a closer look.
Permits. Expect $100 to $1,000 for plumbing, electrical and building permits, depending on the work. Rules vary by city. Moving plumbing or adding a circuit usually needs one.
Demolition. Tearing out and hauling away the old bathroom costs $1,000 to $2,300 according to NerdWallet, or from $600 in Fixr's data. Some contractors fold it into labor. Others list it separately.
Hidden damage. Nearly 1 in 4 homeowners in a 2026 survey found unexpected water damage once the walls were open. Repairs add about $3.75 to $7 per square foot. That's why a cushion matters.
What does a bathroom remodel look like, step by step?
Most remodels take 2 to 4 weeks from start to finish, though big jobs can run up to 12. In a 2026 survey, nearly two-thirds of homeowners said their project lasted one to four weeks. About 1 in 5 went past a month.
The usual order looks like this:
- Plan, measure and choose fixtures.
- Get quotes and pull permits.
- Demolition.
- Rough plumbing and electrical, then inspection.
- Walls, waterproofing and tile.
- Vanity, toilet, fixtures and paint.
- Final inspection and walkthrough.
A fixture that arrives late can stall the work, so it helps to have everything on site before demolition starts. Our bathroom remodel steps guide adds how long each step takes and when you typically pay.
How do you read a contractor's quote?
Two quotes for the same bathroom can be thousands of dollars apart. That doesn't always mean one contractor is overcharging. Usually it means they priced different jobs.

Before you sign
Check that the quote:
0 of 7 confirmed
Allowances deserve a second look. A low quote with a $150 vanity allowance isn't comparable to a higher one with a $1,200 allowance. Put the same fixtures in every bid before you compare totals.
Get at least three quotes. Same scope, same fixtures, same questions.
How can you save without cutting corners?
The biggest savings come from decisions, not discounts.
- Keep the layout. Changing the floor plan, which means moving plumbing and electrical, adds about $5,000. Keeping the toilet, sink and shower where they are is the single biggest saver.
- Refresh instead of remodel. A smaller update, like paint, hardware, lighting and a new vanity, usually stays under $5,000.
- Choose prefab in the shower. A prefab walk-in shower saves around $5,000 on average compared with custom tile.
- Spend on what you touch. Put money into the faucet and the shower valve. Save on décor you can change later.
- Plan a cushion. Fixr suggests at least 5%. This Old House recommends 20%. About 1 in 3 surveyed homeowners went over budget.
Some work isn't a place to save. Plumbing, wiring and waterproofing should be done by qualified pros, with permits where your city requires them.
Does a bathroom remodel pay off when you sell?
Partly. In the 2025 Cost vs. Value report, a midrange bathroom remodel costing $26,138 added about $20,915 to resale value. That's 80% of the cost recovered. An upscale remodel recovered 41.7%.
The takeaway: remodel for how you'll use the room. A modest update tends to hold its value better than a high-end one.
